The Area

This coastal community offers a rich mixture of elements that draws people of all age groups. A dynamic economy, outstanding schools, abundant recreation and fabulous entertainment collectively shape Florence's small-town ambience.

Situated 50 miles west of Eugene on the magnificent Pacific Ocean, Florence is considered 'Lane County's gateway to the Oregon Coast.'  Miles of continuous beaches, golden sand dunes, evergreen forests, and over a dozen freshwater lakes paint the surrounding landscape. The Siuslaw River, a natural home to salmon and a huge variety of wildlife, winds its way through expansive estuaries and past Old Town Florence before reaching the Pacific Ocean.

The residents play a very active role in community and business development.  In an effort to promote continued expansion, a plan for urban renewal has been set in place.  Many improvements, including the recent addition of a waterfront boardwalk in Old Town, enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.  Even though Florence is set some distance from the I-5 corridor,  Oregon State Highways and the Florence Municipal Airport offer all the amenities of present-day travel.  The residents of Florence enjoy a picturesque, laid-back coastal life, while having easy access to Eugene's metropolitan charm.

Florence is home to some of the most remarkable sites on the Oregon Coast, such as the Sea Lion Caves and the stunning Heceta Head Lighthouse. The community is full of character, culture, dazzling arts, and a rich history.  Fresh Northwest cuisine and Old Town shopping give Florence a timeless old-world flavor.  Whether you are in the mood for a scenic drive along highway 101, walk to a waterfall, ride on the magnificent Oregon Dunes, or would rather take in a bird's eye view of Oregon from the sky, the scenic landscape of the Central Oregon Coast is unmatched.

Opportunities for recreation are sprinkled throughout Florence and the neighboring communities of Newport, Lincoln City and North Bend.  The nearly 8,000+ residents of Florence and welcomed visitors can enjoy a long list of activities such as horseback riding, golf, hiking, fishing, surfing, an ATV ride on the dunes or even scuba diving.  With a generous list of renowned camping and RV sites to choose from, Florence offers something for the adventure in everyone.  Right in the heart of Florence, the Florence Events Center is home to an amazing variety of events, including musical and theatrical productions.  Florence also hosts several community festivals throughout the year, including the Rhododendron Festival, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary!

Florence has been voted the number 1 retirement community in the entire U.S. by USA Today and AARP Magazines along with top ratings in many other publications.  This may explain why nearly one-third of the residents are active retirees.  And while the community is a perfect place to retire, it is equally irresistible to young families looking for a safe, small-town location for their children to enjoy life as they grow.
